Friction stir welding of aluminium alloy T-joints technology - cooperation with equpiment and machine factory GOŠA FOM


The aim of this project was to conquer the technology of manufacturing of T-joints using friction stir welding, with the use of auxiliary clamping devices. This project was realized by the Innovation Center of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the equipment and machine factory, GOŠA FOM. Joints were made in two ways: by welding two plates in a single tool pass, and by welding three plates with two tool passes. Workplates were made of AlMg3, clamping device was made of stainless steel, and tool was made of tool steel. Testing of welded joints (visual inspection of weld face and root, hardness distribution and micro-structure development) have shown that the necessary quality level was achieved for industrial application, along with minimal adaptation costs of the existing mills. In addition, the application of the finite element method enabled a simple analysis of influences of input parameters on time and space temperature distribution, which in turn enabled considerable savings in experimental research. This project was financed by the Department of Education, Science and Technological Development.
